Stories that challenge gender stereotypes
These books transcend outdated stereotypes about what it means to be a boy or a girl. They portray children experiencing the full range of human emotions and interests, developing their creativity, showing affection and practicing sensitivity regardless of gender. Books like these can help to dispel gender stereotypes about what children are "supposed to be" and teach them that uniqueness and individuality are to be celebrated.
These stories may depict girls demonstrating traits such as strength, determination and leadership or boys engaging in creative pursuits, sharing their feelings or engaging in other types of play that have historically been labeled “gender-nonconforming.”
